Save Money with my Google Home Budget Spreaadsheet

My wife and I have triplets, so we are always watching our expenses. I’ve tried several diferent types of budgeting software, and I always find some major flaw. I just wanted something that is simple to update and flexible enough to customize to my needs.  Usually the software is  too restrictive/ not flexible enough to customize to my needs- and I stop using it.   So I developed a home budget using a Google Spreadsheet.

We now manage our home budget by filling out a simple web based form. If I get gas, I can go to my web form and put in the amount (I can even do this on an Iphone!). The spreadsheet is full of several complex formulas, that do all of the work for you- The spreadsheet takes the simple data I inut to the web based from  and it  populates  several tables of my home budget spreadseet.  I only need to fill out the form, that is it. Best of all it’s fully customizable- I can customize my expenses, I can add additional tables, graphs, gadgets.  And it is web based, so I can access it from work or home or even from an IPhone.

The spreadsheet contains several tabs. My favorite tab is the “Monthly Targets” tab. This tab automatically changes every month and auto populates with all of my expenses and budget amounts. There is also a nice graph. For example I can quickly see that I’ve spent $124 dollars so far this month going out to eat- and I have $76 dollars left to spend this month.

By simply keeping a budget you WILL save money.

I have found this to be very true. Just keeping visibility on what I’ve spent really helps to save money.  Knowing what you’ve spent keeps you conscious when you go to spend more. There is nothing greater than hitting the end of the month and seeing that I have gone UNDER budget by say $500. I can  take that money and put some towards a vacation, or divide the rest up amongst my savings account or go out and buy something nice.
